How to Prepare Your Idaho Home for Winter

2. Disconnect and Drain Outdoor Hoses

This one is easy to overlook. Disconnect all garden hoses from exterior hose bibs before temperatures drop below freezing, then completely drain them before storing them for the winter.

Leaving a hose connected can trap water where you don’t want it once temperatures begin to freeze.

3. Give Your HVAC System a Winter Check

Your heating system is about to put in some serious work. Replace your furnace filter and consider scheduling routine HVAC maintenance if it’s due.

Don’t forget about the exterior unit, either. Throughout the winter, check around it periodically and clear away accumulated snow, leaves, or other debris so the area remains unobstructed.

4. Get Your Fireplace Ready

There are few things better than a fireplace on a cold Idaho evening. Before using yours for the season, make sure it’s clean and operating properly.

For gas fireplaces, review the manufacturer’s operating instructions and keep the area around the unit and vents clear. If anything doesn’t appear to be working correctly, have it inspected by a qualified professional before use.

5. Check Windows and Exterior Doors

Take a quick walk through your home and check around windows and exterior doors for noticeable drafts or damaged weatherstripping.

Addressing small gaps can help keep cold air outside and heated air inside, making your home more comfortable throughout the winter.

6. Keep an Eye on Gutters

Once the leaves have fallen, clear debris from gutters and downspouts so water can drain properly.

Continue checking them throughout the winter for snow or ice buildup, and make sure downspouts remain clear and direct water away from your home’s foundation.

7. Protect Your Outdoor Spaces and Concrete

Clean and store outdoor furniture, cushions, umbrellas, décor, and other seasonal items that aren’t intended to remain outside year-round. It’s also a good time to put away gardening tools and secure anything that could be affected by winter weather.

When snow and ice arrive, avoid using salt or de-icing chemicals that can damage concrete surfaces. Follow the care recommendations for your home’s concrete when removing snow or treating icy areas.

8. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

With furnaces and fireplaces seeing more use during the winter, take a few minutes to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Replace batteries when needed and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for testing and replacing each device.

9. Know Where Your Main Water Shutoff Is

If you’re a new homeowner, this is one of those things that’s worth knowing before you ever need it.

Locate your home’s main water shutoff and make sure you know how to operate it. If you ever experience a plumbing leak or another unexpected issue, knowing how to quickly shut off the water can help limit damage.
